Endangered Sounds

curioHistory, Science

New technology continues to sweep through our lives, pushing out the old and perpetuating the next gen. Every sound needs a place to live. As we’re busting around making developments in technology we destroy the habitats of the sounds, polluting the once loved landscape of noises and music from everyday new-fangled technological items. These actions kill some species outright and push others into areas where they can’t find the love and attention they need to survive.

Exotic sounds often have a predatory or competitive advantage over native sounds: they are the latest hit, the newest fad, easily outing the sounds which have been around for years. Even though native sounds are well adapted to their surroundings and carry out their functions flawlessly, it is often the environment that is changing; we are creating necessity that was not there before, inventing new requirements that simply cannot be filled by the old.

Over the past hundred years, humans have made significant changes to natural sound environments all over the globe, and most of these changes have negatively affected the sound-scape we all experience every day, forcing unprecedented numbers of sound-bites toward extinction. Many sounds have become figments of the imagination, recorded to memory and nostalgia and reminders of the good old times when weird and wacky noises ran rampant around the realms of technology and industry.
