The Night Watchman
“Please Sir, have you any stories to tell us?”
—
A man from Barton Hill in East Bristol recalls a time when Night Watchmen would be posted in makeshift huts at construction sites and road works…. “if it was a long job.”
The voice is from an archive of tapes collected and recorded by the Barton Hill History Group in the 1980s. The tapes document the stories, memories, and lives of the people of Barton Hill and focus on life on Barton Hill and in the surrounding areas of East Bristol. These stories range in time from the early 1920s through to the mid 1940s and 50s and describe the people and places of Barton Hill as well as capturing beautiful anecdotes and tales of events or occurrences in the community.
